A herd of alpacas are surprisingly low maintenance, as they will live out at grass all year round. They have an approximate stocking rate of 4-5 alpacas per acre. Worming and vaccinating is required every 6 months with a foot trim needed when necessary. Suris require shearing every other year with the Huacayas needing to be done every year.
Having your alpaca accustomed to the halter will make life a lot easier when it comes to worming, vaccinating, foot trimming and shearing. It will also be easier should the alpaca need veterinary treatment.
