Niger seed is very attractive to honeybees when used in bee pastures and can increase yields of follow on crops when used as a green manure. If it is planted under warm conditions, it will flower in as few as 30-35 days. It has few disease problems, but can suffer under cool, wet conditions. Finches and Doves love the seed produced by the plants when they mature. Niger has bright yellow flowers and is not related to the ‘thistle’ in any way – which its seed is commonly mistaken for.
