Spring Triticale is a low maintenance cereal crop. It takes its name from the latin for wheat (TRITIcum) and the latin for rye (SeCALE). There are several varieties available which have been bred for factors such as yield, resistance to lodging and length of straw. In general, Triticale has very good root development which allows it to tap nutrients and water deep from the soil, making it very tolerant to a variety of stressful situations. Popular for game cover due to the stiff straw and relative unpalatability to rabbits.
