Tillage Radish

Tillage Radishes are useful for breaking down hard and compacted soils to improve aeration and drainage. They are also useful for storing and then releasing nutrients to follow on crops.

Tillage Radish, or Daikon Radish has a particularly deep tap root which is useful for breaking up hard and compacted heavy soils, thus improving soil structure, aerationย and drainage. Then follow on from this means that successive crops have increased rooting depth opportunities which makes for stronger, healthier crops. Tillage Radish tap roots are like sponges that absorb residual nutrients from deep in the soil and store them until termination in the spring. The nutrients absorbed by the tap root are readily available to the following cash crop because, as the root is mostly water, it decays quickly releasing those nutrientsย almost immediatelyย (between two to four weeks).
