Agricultural Herbs

Burnet, also called Sheep’s Burnet or Salad Burnet, is a perennial forage herb that boosts species diversity in grazing leys. It is winter hardy, drought tolerant once established and its deep taproot draws up trace elements and minerals to improve soil and forage quality.

This herb grows upright stems from a basal rosette, with toothed leaves arranged in pairs. From June to September, it produces crimson, oblong flowers, adding both functionality and visual appeal to pastures.

Ribgrass, or Ribwort Plantain, is a perennial forage herb commonly included in grazing leys to boost diversity. Rich in minerals and with a protein content of 13-14%, it supports meat and milk production while improving soil quality through its deep roots, which draw up valuable trace elements.

The plant features thick, ribbed leaves from a basal rosette and distinctive brown flower heads with white anthers, making it both functional and visually appealing in grazing systems.

Yarrow is a perennial forage herb often sown in grazing leys to boost diversity. Its deep taproots draw trace elements closer to the soil surface, enhance drought tolerance and help the plant stay green during dry periods. Rich in minerals, Yarrow is also believed to improve circulation in livestock.

The plant features finely divided, feathery leaves and produces delicate white or pink flower umbels, adding both functionality and beauty to grazing systems.

Chicory

Chicory is a versatile forage herb often included in grazing leys with other herbs. Its deep taproot improves soil by breaking compaction, enhancing aeration and aiding drainage. This frost-tolerant, mineral-rich plant has a protein content of 17–18%, ideal for fattening lambs and its natural anthelmintic properties help reduce worm burdens in ruminants.

Chicory forms a leafy basal rosette and blooms with striking cornflower-blue flowers from July to September.

Sheep's Parsley is a hardy perennial forage herb, ideal for enhancing grazing leys with its drought tolerance and ability to lift trace elements from deep within the soil via its long taproot. Rich in essential nutrients like iron and vitamins A and C, it supports the fertility of breeding stock by improving their nutrition.

The plant features bright green, parsley-like leaves and produces clusters of small white or off-white flowers, which not only add visual appeal but also contribute to the overall biodiversity and nutrient diversity in grazing systems.

Fibrous Root System

A fibrous root system is a collection of shallow fine roots of similar length that branch out from a central location at the surface.

Agricultural Clovers

Red Clover is a hardy perennial legume, often incorporated into grass/clover swards to provide numerous benefits for both livestock and soil. Its robust tap roots improve soil structure while fixing nitrogen, thus reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Red Clover is highly digestible, which promotes better weight gain in livestock, and its high protein content enhances forage quality. It also competes well against weeds and is drought-tolerant once established. However, it should be used with caution as it can cause bloat in cattle.

With a lifespan of 2-3 years, Red Clover features vibrant pinkish-red flowers from May to October and distinctive green trefoil-shaped leaves with white "V" markings. This legume thrives in nutrient-rich, well-drained soils and provides long-term benefits.

White Clover is a perennial legume commonly categorized into small, medium, and large-leaf varieties. Similar to Red Clover, it fixes nitrogen, reducing the need for artificial fertilizers, and helps improve soil structure by alleviating compaction. It is also an effective weed suppressant and provides a valuable, homegrown source of protein for livestock. However, it can increase the risk of bloat, particularly in cattle, so it should be used with care.

Large-leaved varieties are particularly suited for silage leys or cutting systems due to their upright growth habit. White Clover features green trefoil-shaped leaves and produces delicate white pompom-like flowers from May to October, enhancing the visual appeal of pastures while benefiting livestock health and soil quality.
