Farming can be challenging at times, whatever crops your grow. The weather during 2024 has been a combination of extremes from very wet to very dry. We also had a lot of wind and a lot of dull weather thrown in to the mix too.

Our wildflower production takes place on sites throughout the UK and weather and temperatures varied from region to region. Having crops growing throughout the country helps spread the risk as if one crop fails or has a low yield due to weather, we will be growing some of the more common species elsewhere. Also, some wildflowers thrive better on certain soil types so they are situated where they will grow at their best.

Different wildflower species

Our Red Campion was the first crop to be harvested in early June. The crop goes dull in the run up to harvest and the flowers develop seed pods.

Next was the Field Scabious in late June. This crop was absolutely stunning and a magnet for bees.

Harvesting took place throughout the summer and early autumn with the Meadowsweet, Teasel and Ribwort Plantain being our last crops to be done. Below is the Teasel harvesting in progress.

After each crop was harvested, the seed was brought in, dried and stored ready for cleaning. The crops are then cleaned throughout the winter so they are ready for use in our wildflower mixtures.
