With many front lawns turning into paved driveways and back lawns being replaced by artificial grass or low maintenance hard landscaping, many people don't appreciate the beneficial aspect they are taking from the environment by removing their lawns.
Your lawn benefits the environment in more ways than one, both above and below ground.
We are experiencing more volatile weather from the effects of climate change and the rain water needs to go somewhere. A healthy, well maintained lawn can absorb a considerable amount of rainwater compared to bare soil. Rain run off can also gather grit and dirt on the way to the drains which can contribute to them blocking.
Lawns also produce oxygen and draw carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the soil. They can also trap dirt and dust and filter airborne pollutants which helps purify the air.
The benefits don't stop there! Grass has the capability to improve the soil as the grass roots can help stabilise it, which reduces soil run off and minimises nutrient depletion.
Your lawn has so many benefits, it is worth keeping!
