Pallets can make the perfect planters for your herbs or flowers!
Follow our step by step guide or watch our short video to make the perfect pallet planter!
1) Get an untreated pallet
2) Sand any rough or unsightly areas (although these do add to the pallet's charm!)
3) Choose a wood stain or fence paint and paint the whole pallet with 2-3 coats. The back will be up against the wall but it still a good idea to paint this area so the wood is preserved. Wait for the paint to be fully dry before moving on to the next stage
4) Line the sections where the soil will sit and secure the lining with a staple gun. The plastic from old compost bags is great for doing this.
5) Pierce a few small holes in the lining of each plant section to allow for drainage
6) Fill each section with soil
7) Sprinkle your chosen seeds, ensuring they are of varieties that won't grow too big and overtake the planter. Alternatively, fill your planter with plants or herbs from your garden centre
8) Keep the soil moist until the plants are established and then keep watered regularly dependant on the plants requirement
Here is a short video on the pallet planter process
We used the following species in our planters - Pot Marigold, Californian Poppy, White Cosmos, Scarlet Flax, Corn Marigold, Tufted Vetch, Corn Chamomile and Cornflowers (both native and ornamental Double Ball Cornflowers)
